If you’re running low on storage or just want to tidy up your device, knowing how to permanently delete files on your iPhone is a must.

In this step-by-step guide, I’ll show you exactly how to remove files from your iPhone — not just delete them, but permanently erase them from your device and free up space for good.

Step 1: Open the Files App

First things first — open the Files app on your iPhone.

You’ll recognize it by the blue folder icon on a white background.

If you can’t find it, simply swipe down on your home screen and search for “Files” — it comes pre-installed on all iPhones.

Step 2: Navigate to ‘On My iPhone’

Once inside the Files app:

  • Tap Browse at the bottom of the screen.

  • Under Locations, select On My iPhone.

Here you’ll find all the folders and files stored directly on your device — including downloads, documents, and other saved files.

Step 3: Select and Delete Files

To delete files:

  1. Tap the three dots in the upper right corner.

  2. Tap Select from the dropdown menu.

  3. Choose the files you want to delete by tapping them (you’ll see a checkmark appear).

  4. Tap the Trash Can icon at the bottom of the screen.

🚨 Important:

At this point, the files are deleted — but not permanently! They are still stored in the Recently Deleted folder, taking up space.

Step 4: Permanently Delete Files from ‘Recently Deleted’

To truly wipe them off your device:

  1. Go back to the Browse section of the Files app.

  2. Scroll down and tap on Recently Deleted.

  3. Tap the three dots again and choose Select.

  4. Tap Select All in the top left corner (or manually select individual files).

  5. Tap the Delete button at the bottom of the screen.

  6. Confirm when prompted.

And just like that — your files are now permanently deleted and your iPhone storage is freed up!

Bonus Tip: Works for iPad Too!

Good news — this method isn’t limited to just iPhones.

If you have an iPad or any iOS device with the Files app installed, the steps are exactly the same.

Final Thoughts

Permanently deleting files from your iPhone is a simple but powerful way to keep your device running smoothly and maintain your storage space.

Just remember: deleting from the Files app alone isn’t enough — always empty the Recently Deleted folder to ensure your files are truly gone.
